Overview

Developed a concept for TikTok virtual gifts, exploring how digital items can enhance creator–audience interaction through more expressive and platform-native design.

Informed by prior experience designing gifting systems and engagement features at Meta, the project rethinks how virtual goods can function as both emotional expression and monetization mechanics.

The Challenge

Virtual gifting systems often feel transactional, limiting their impact on both engagement and creator expression.

Having previously worked on features like Stars, virtual gifts, and creator engagement systems, I saw an opportunity to evolve gifting into something more performative and culturally relevant.

The goal was to explore how gifts could:

  • Feel more native to TikTok’s fast-paced, expressive culture

  • Drive stronger real-time audience participation

  • Create more memorable, shareable creator moments

My Role

I explored the concept from both a creative and product mindset, focusing on:

  • Identifying opportunities to evolve the virtual gifting experience

  • Designing a concept that aligns with TikTok’s visual language and user behavior

  • Creating visuals that emphasize motion, personality, and shareability

Key Contributions

  • Conceptualized a more expressive and character-driven approach to virtual gifting

  • Designed visuals that feel playful, reactive, and performance-driven

  • Explored how gifts could become moments of entertainment, not just transactions

Outcome

Created a forward-looking concept that demonstrates how virtual gifts could evolve into more engaging and culturally relevant experiences on TikTok.

The work highlights opportunities to strengthen both user engagement and monetization through more thoughtful design.

Reflection

This project reinforced the value of designing for behavior, not just visuals.

Strong concepts come from understanding how people interact on a platform and creating experiences that amplify those behaviors in a natural and engaging way.
